The Backstory: Starting From Scratch.

Since 2008, I’ve cherished a loving marriage, but the early years were filled with challenges that tested our faith and resilience in ways I never expected. As I work closely with young Christian homemakers, I often see their struggles mirrored in my own journey. My husband went months without a paycheck. Sometimes we had to walk to our destinations because we simply couldn’t afford transport. Dinners at his mum’s became our solace, a chance to escape our empty cupboards, yet those meals were overshadowed by the worry of unpaid bills. I remember the anxiety of needing UGX 10,000 just to move to a nicer ward after having our son in a government hospital—such a small amount that felt like an insurmountable luxury.

Social situations often turned into painful reminders of our struggles. I’ll never forget the humiliation of being asked to leave my seat at a friend’s wedding because my outfit wasn’t picture-perfect. I felt the sting of inadequacy as I navigated friendships while juggling financial pressures.

Our nights were sometimes filled with hunger, our children’s nausea reminding us of the emptiness in our kitchen. There were times I desperately hoped a friend would see my last text, as I had no money left to send another message. With a growing family, we faced tough choices: using cloth nappies during the day and only the occasional disposable at night, all because we couldn’t afford them. Market shopping trips became a source of stress, as I felt the embarrassment of bargaining for items I couldn’t really afford, often settling for squashed, damaged vegetables simply because they were cheaper.

When we prayed fervently for uncomplicated childbirths, it was not out of faith alone but out of sheer necessity. When I say I understand what it means to start from scratch, I mean it with every fiber of my being. I’ve faced these challenges, and now I’m here to help you navigate your own path. I want to help you find stability, meet your basic needs, and eventually embrace life’s little luxuries.
